In Patrick Buchanan's latest book, The Death of the West he discusses how dying populations and immigrant invasions imperil our country and civilization. One of the most serious problems facing the United States has to do with the Mexican invasion. Millions of Mexicans are here illegally. They broke the law to enter our country, and they continue breaking the law to stay. Unlike immigrants of a generation ago who bid farewell to the mother country, and assimilated in to the American culture, millions of Mexican descent have no desire to learn English, or become citizens. America is not their home, Mexico is. They have come to work, not assimilate. They create little Tijuana's in U.S. cities. They have their own radio and TV stations, newspapers, films, and magazines. The Mexican Americans are creating a Hispanic culture separate and apart from America's larger culture. They are becoming a nation within a nation. Three years ago, the south Texas town of El Cenizo declared Spanish its official language and ordered that all official documents be written in Spanish and all town business be conducted in Spanish. Any cooperation with U.S. immigration authorities was made a firing offense.¹ El Cenizo has, defacto, seceded from the United States. The spirit of separatism and nationalism has come alive in the barrio. The Latino student organization MEChA (which is the Chicano version of a white-supremacist Arian nation) demands return of the Southwest to Mexico. Jesus predicted this occurrence due to our unrighteous condition. He warned the Nephites of a time when the remnant of Jacob would go forth as a young lion to tread the Gentiles down.²

Alexander Solzhenitzyn said: "To destroy a people, you first must sever their roots." In America today we have a new history. On the 500^th anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus the United Nations canceled its Columbus Day Celebration, and the National Council of Churches urged that the day be set aside as a time for penitence for the "genocide, slavery, ecocide and exploitation" the Italian explorer introduced to the Americas.³ This new culture has changed our history, rejected the beliefs of the American Colonists, declared the founding fathers to be racists, de-Christianized our nation, and introduced gay rights. The press of recent has refused to call the immorality in the Roman Catholic church by its real name, homosexuality, preferring instead to call it pedophilia, even though many of these immoral infractions are with boys older than 12. This is simply due to the fact that many in the press embrace homosexuality.

In our day the providential means to understand the truth about that history―what really happened and why it happened―is found in the Book of Mormon. While the book is itself history, it contains specific prophecies (history in reverse if you like) about the rise of latter-day America, beginning with its European discovery by a man upon whom "the Spirit of God"…came down and wrought upon.⁴ When the Palmyra Seer introduced the latter-day revelations, the Lord warned of great judgments to come:⁵ Additionally, General George Washington, a seer in his own right was shown a vision of the birth, progress and destiny of the United States.⁶ He was shown three perils to come upon this Republic. Two have already come to pass the third is yet before us: "And I heard the mysterious voice saying, 'Son of the Republic, look and learn.' At this the dark, shadowy angel placed a trumpet to his lips and blew three distinct blasts; and taking water from the ocean, he sprinkled it on Europe, Asia and Africa. Then my eyes beheld a fearful scene; from each of these countries arose thick black clouds and were soon joined into one. And throughout this mass there gleamed a dark red light by which I was seeing hordes of armed men who, moving with the cloud, marched by land and sailed by sea to America, which country was enveloped in the volume of the cloud. And I dimly saw these vast armies devastate the whole country and burn villages, towns and cities that I beheld springing up.

The angel Moroni told Joseph Smith on 22 September 1823 that: "the day cometh that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly shall burn as stubble; for they that cometh shall burn them saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch."⁷

Washington's vision spoke of thick black clouds while Moroni referred to a fire or burning up. The prophet Joel ties both of these ideas together for us: "Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain; let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains; a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be anymore after it, even to the years of many generations. A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth; the land is as the Garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble as a strong people set in battle array."⁸

The prophecy from the Book of Mormon and the vision of George Washington take on even greater significance when elucidated for us by Jeremiah: "Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land; cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defensed cities. Set up the standard toward Zion; retire, stay not; for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction. The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant."⁹

Joseph the Seer declared on 22 June, 1834 that the destroyer of the Gentiles was already on his way.¹⁰ Karl Marx was sixteen years of age at this time. Today, with the increasing drum beat to engage in war in the Middle East and the influence of Communism with its infiltration into Mesoamerica by the aid of the Jesuits may indeed signal the time for both the Lion to come up from his thicket and the thick black clouds from Asia, Africa, and Europe to fulfill the prophetic voice. The amazing part of this story is the promise of the rescue of America by both Nephi and the vision shown to General Washington.

Our Country Emerges the Victor

"And every nation which shall war against thee, O house of Israel, shall be turned one against another. And they shall fall into the pit which they digged to ensnare the people of the Lord. And all that fight against Zion, shall be destroyed. And the great whore, who hath perverted the right ways of the Lord; yea, that great and abominable church, shall tumble to the dust, and great shall be the fall of it."¹¹

"Instantly a light as of a thousand suns shown down from above me, and pierced and broke into fragments the dark cloud which enveloped America. At the same moment the angel upon whose head still shown the word 'Union'¹² and who bore our national flag in one hand and a sword in the other, descended from the heavens attended by legions of white spirits. These immediately joined the inhabitants of America, whom I perceived were well-nigh overcome, but who, immediately taking courage again, closed up their broken ranks and renewed the battle. Again, amid the fearful noise of the conflict I heard the mysterious voice saying, 'Son of the Republic, look and learn.' As the voice ceased, the shadowy angel for the last time dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it upon America. Instantly the dark cloud rolled back, together with the armies it had brought, leaving the inhabitants of the land victorious."

Apostle Orson Hyde in his days of ministerial fidelity believed and taught that the Spirit Angel that guided Columbus to the New World, also visited George Washington in this vision, as well as plead with the Founding Fathers in Independence Hall to sign the parchment, would return and rescue the constitution following the War Between the States.¹³ Perhaps, Joseph Smith III was guided by the hand of this same Spirit Angel to help enact the Edmund's Bill outlawing polygamy in the Utah Territory. If this Spirit Angel was this involved in the birth and progress of our Republic, his assistance seems assured again to rescue our constitution and nation, with the title of Liberty as predicted in Washington's vision. A dark and cloudy night is yet before this Republic as well as the Saint's of latter-day Israel as predicted by the prophets. However, we should take courage realizing that the hope of the completion of the Latter-day work is assured through angelic ministry.
